  • Responsibilities and Services
    Risk Management is responsible for protecting the County's assets from the risk of accidental losses and injuries. The primary functions are to develop, promote, and track safety programs that meet or exceed OSHA regulations, evaluate risk, procure insurance policies and administer workers' compensation, property, general liability and automobile claims.

    In addition, Risk Management fosters a culture of safety through employee training, monthly safety review and quarterly safety committee meetings that involve all departments in the commitment to ensure a safe environment for all employees, as well as the citizens who visit the County's facilities daily.

Spring Safety Tips

Springtime usually means lots of cleaning and outdoor activities. During this time, it is important to consider a few safety precautions to keep you and your family safe.      

     Yard Work Safety

  • When using lawn mowers and other yard equipment, always wear safety glasses and hearing protection to prevent injury to your eyes and hearing.
  • Protect yourself from poison ivy and other "poisonous" plants by wearing long sleeves and long pants.
  • Wear gloves to protect your skin from irritations, cuts and contaminants.
  • Follow instructions and warning labels on chemicals and lawn and garden products.
  • Lift safely - bend at the knees, keep the weight close to your body and lift with your legs.
  • When moving heavy materials, carry several smaller loads instead of one large load. Use a wheelbarrow or some type of wheeled device whenever possible.
  • Before excavating or digging you must call Miss Utility at 1-800-257-7777.
  • Always inspect your work area for overhead lines. Maintain a 10 foot distance in all directions when using ladders, trimmers or pruners near power lines.

     Home Safety Checks

  • Check medicine cabinets and discard expired medications.  The county has two 24/7 drop boxes located at the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, 30 Church Street, Prince Frederick and the Maryland State Police, Barrack “U”, 210 Main Street, Prince Frederick, Maryland.
  • Check your first aid kit and/or emergency preparedness kits. Check batteries and expiration dates of supplies.
  • Change or clean air filters for system efficiency and preventive maintenance.
  • Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are free from dust and debris and are functioning properly. It is recommended you test your alarms on a monthly basis.
